- January SSI arrives Thu, Dec 30, 2027: January 1, 2028 is a Saturday, and Friday, December 31 is the observed New Year holiday, so the payment moves back two business days.
- April SSI arrives Fri, Mar 31 because the 1st falls on a Saturday, so the payment moves to the previous business day.
- June 3rd-schedule payments arrive Fri, Jun 2 because the 3rd falls on a Saturday.
- July SSI arrives Fri, Jun 30 because the 1st falls on a Saturday, so the payment moves to the previous business day.
- September 3rd-schedule payments arrive Fri, Sep 1 because the 3rd falls on a Sunday.
- October SSI arrives Fri, Sep 29 because the 1st falls on a Sunday, so the payment moves to the previous business day.
- December 3rd-schedule payments arrive Fri, Dec 1 because the 3rd falls on a Sunday.
SSI in 2028: the double-deposit months
Because the January 2028 SSI payment arrives on Thursday, December 30, 2027 (January 1 is a Saturday and December 31 is the observed holiday), SSI recipients start 2028 having just been paid. The same early-payment mechanics then produce two deposits in March, June, September, December and no deposit at all in January, April, July, October — twelve payments across the year, as always, just unevenly spaced. The pattern repeats at the year boundary: the January 2029 SSI payment arrives on Friday, December 29, 2028, because January 1, 2029 is a holiday Monday and the preceding days are a weekend. Budget accordingly: an early deposit is next month's money arriving ahead of schedule, never a thirteenth payment.
What is not on this page: the 2028 COLA
The 2028 cost-of-living adjustment will be computed from the CPI-W for July–September 2027 against the third-quarter 2026 base of 328.746, and announced in October 2027. Until then any specific 2028 percentage is an estimate. Is the 2028 COLA included in these dates?
There is no 2028 COLA yet — it will be announced in October 2027, based on third-quarter 2027 inflation. This page is a payment calendar only: it tells you when 2028 payments arrive, not what they will be. The developing estimate is tracked on the 2028 COLA forecast page.
Why does SSI get paid twice in some months of 2028?
SSI is paid on the 1st, moved earlier when the 1st is a weekend or holiday. In 2028 that pulls four payments into the previous month, so deposits land twice in March, June, September and December — and not at all in January, April, July and October. The early deposit is the next month's payment, not a bonus.
Do Wednesday payment dates ever shift in 2028?
Wednesdays never collide with the weekend, and in 2028 no Wednesday cohort date falls on a federal holiday, so the second/third/fourth Wednesday pattern runs uninterrupted all year. Only the 1st-of-month (SSI) and 3rd-of-month schedules shift.
When will the official 2028 SSA calendar be published?
The SSA publishes its schedule of payment dates late in the preceding year. The dates here are computed from the SSA's standing rules — Wednesday cohorts by birth date, 1st and 3rd moved to the previous business day when needed — and matched every shift in the published 2026 and 2027 calendars.
Method: Wednesday cohorts per SSA payment rules (birth dates 1–10 / 11–20 / 21–31); SSI on the 1st and legacy benefits on the 3rd, each moved to the previous business day when the date falls on a weekend or federal holiday (including observed holidays, e.g. Friday, December 31, 2027 for New Year 2028). Weekdays verified against the 2028 calendar (a leap year).
