2027 COLA FAQ: Every Common Question, Answered

Quick answer: The 2027 COLA is 3.6%, announced October 14, 2026. It raises Social Security checks from January 2027 (average retiree: $2,095 → $2,170) and SSI from December 31, 2026 (maximum $994 → $1,029). It is automatic — no application, no fee. Every specific question is answered below.

This hub collects the questions beneficiaries actually ask, grouped by topic, with each answer kept short and linked to the page that does the full math. Figures are the SSA's official ones; the only projections used anywhere here — the 2027 Medicare Part B premium and the 2027 VA rates — are labeled as projections every time.

Amounts & the increase

Is the 2027 COLA really 3.6%?

Yes. The Social Security Administration announced a 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment on October 14, 2026, based on the CPI-W's third-quarter rise from 317.265 to 328.746. It applies to Social Security benefits from January 2027 and to SSI from December 31, 2026. The detailed walk-through is on the how COLA is calculated page.

How much will my check go up?

By 3.6% of your current benefit, rounded down to the dollar: a $1,000 benefit becomes $1,036 (+$36), $1,500 becomes $1,554 (+$54), and the average retired worker's $2,095 becomes $2,170 (+$75). Use the calculator on the home page for your exact amount.

How much will the average retiree get in 2027?

$2,170 a month, up from $2,095 — the SSA's own estimate. An aged couple both receiving benefits averages $3,355, and an aged widow(er) alone averages $2,005. The full table for every class is on the 2027 average benefits page.

Is the percentage the same for everyone?

Yes — retirement, spousal, survivors, SSDI and SSI all rise by the same 3.6%. The dollar amounts differ only because the underlying benefits differ. Technically the SSA applies the percentage to your primary insurance amount, so your noticed figure can differ by about $1 from multiplying your check by 1.036.

What is the maximum Social Security benefit in 2027?

Benefits depend on your earnings record and claiming age. At the maximum: claiming at full retirement age (67) is roughly in the low $4,000s per month, and delaying to 70 with 35 years of maximum-taxable earnings reaches roughly the low $5,000s. Whatever the starting amount, it rises by the same 3.6% in 2027.

Will the COLA be the same in 2028?

Nobody knows yet. The 2028 COLA depends on CPI-W data through the third quarter of 2027 and will be announced in October 2027. Forecasters' early estimates are speculation; the measurable inputs accumulate during 2027.

How does 3.6% compare with past COLAs?

It is the third-largest of the past decade — behind 8.7% and 5.9% from the pandemic inflation period — and above the long-run average of about 2.6%. The largest COLA ever was 14.3% in 1980. See the complete COLA history table.

How much is the increase on a $2,000 benefit?

$72 a month: $2,000 × 1.036 = $2,072. The same arithmetic scales to any amount — the raise is always 3.6% of what you receive now, rounded down to the dollar.

Does the COLA compound over time?

Yes. Each year's adjustment applies to your current, already-increased benefit, so increases build on earlier ones. A benefit that was $1,500 in 2021, for example, has absorbed the 5.9%, 8.7%, 3.2%, 2.5%, 2.8% and now 3.6% adjustments in sequence.

Timing & notices

When does the 2027 COLA start?

For Social Security, the January 2027 payment is the first with the increase — arriving January 13, 20 or 27 depending on your birth date (or December 31, 2026 for the small group paid on the 3rd). For SSI, the first increased payment arrives December 31, 2026. Full calendars: 2027 payment dates.

When do I find out my exact new amount?

Your exact figure is posted in the Message Center of your my Social Security account in late November 2026, and a paper COLA notice is mailed through December 2026. If you want the notice online only, the deadline to opt in to paperless delivery is November 18, 2026.

Do I need to apply for the COLA?

No. The adjustment is automatic for everyone already receiving benefits — you never apply, and there is no fee. Anyone who asks you to pay or to share your Social Security number to "activate" your COLA is running a scam; the SSA will never contact you that way.

What if my January check does not include the increase?

First check which schedule you are on — your cohort's January payment may arrive on January 13, 20 or 27, and a 3rd-of-month or SSI payment arrives December 31, 2026. If the amount is wrong after the right date, compare it with your December COLA notice and contact the SSA at 1-800-772-1213.

When was the 2027 COLA announced?

On October 14, 2026, together with the September CPI-W data it is computed from. The announcement date moves with the Bureau of Labor Statistics release schedule; it is normally in mid-to-late October.

Medicare & deductions

What is the 2027 Medicare Part B premium?

Not yet announced. The 2026 standard premium is $202.90; the Medicare Trustees project $209.50 for 2027 — a projection, clearly labeled everywhere on this site. CMS is expected to announce the official premium in November 2026. Status and history: Part B premium 2027.

How much of my raise does Part B take?

At the projected premium, the increase is $6.60 a month ($209.50 vs $202.90). The average retiree's take-home raise is about $68 of the $75 gross raise. Your own figure: the gross-to-net calculator.

What is the hold harmless rule?

A protection that caps your Part B premium increase at the dollar amount of your COLA raise, so your net check cannot fall — if you were enrolled in Part B in November–December 2026 with the premium withheld from your check. It does not cover new 2027 enrollees, IRMAA payers, or premiums paid by Medicaid or directly.

What is IRMAA and will mine change?

IRMAA is the income-related surcharge on Part B (and Part D) premiums for higher-income beneficiaries. Your 2027 tier is based on your 2025 tax return. The 2027 brackets are announced with the standard premium in November 2026; until then they are projections. A life-changing event (retirement, divorce, death of a spouse) can qualify you for a redetermination on Form SSA-44.

What if I pay Part B myself instead of by deduction?

The premium change applies the same way to your bill, but the hold harmless protection does not apply to premiums you pay directly — one reason most beneficiaries have it withheld.

Do Part D or Medicare Advantage premiums change with the COLA?

No — those are set by the private plans, not by the COLA formula, and they change on their own annual cycle. The Part D income-related surcharge (Part D IRMAA) is, however, announced together with the Part B figures in November.

Taxes & working

Will I pay more tax because of the COLA?

Possibly. Whether Social Security benefits are federally taxable depends on your combined income, and the thresholds ($25,000/$34,000 single; $32,000/$44,000 joint, for the 50%/85% tiers) are not indexed and have not changed since 1983/1993 — so each COLA pushes more beneficiaries over them. Up to 85% of benefits can be taxable; benefits themselves are never taxed in full.

Which states tax Social Security in 2027?

Eight states tax benefits to some degree in 2027: Colorado, Connecticut, Minnesota, Montana, New Mexico, Rhode Island, Utah and Vermont. (Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska finished phasing out their taxes in 2025, and West Virginia's phase-out completes in 2026.) Each state's rules, income thresholds and credits are broken down on the states that tax Social Security benefits page.

Can I work while collecting in 2027?

Yes. If you are under full retirement age all of 2027, you can earn up to $25,560 before the earnings test withholds $1 per $2 above the limit; in the year you reach full retirement age the limit is $67,920 ($1 per $3, and withheld amounts are credited back later). After full retirement age there is no limit. Details: 2027 fact sheet.

Does the higher wage base affect me?

Only if you are still working with earnings near the cap: the maximum earnings subject to the Social Security payroll tax rise to $192,300 in 2027 (from $184,500). For retirees it changes nothing.

Do I pay tax on the COLA itself?

There is no separate tax on the adjustment — it is simply part of your benefit. If your benefits are taxable (see the combined-income question above), the increased amount is taxed the same way as the rest, so a larger check can mean a somewhat larger tax bill the following April.

SSI-specific

What is the maximum SSI payment in 2027?

The federal maximum is $1,029 a month for an individual and $1,544 for a couple, up from $994 and $1,491. Many states add a supplement on top. Amounts by living arrangement: SSI calculator.

Why did my SSI arrive on December 31?

Because the 1st of the following month is a weekend or holiday, SSI pays on the preceding business day. It happens several times in 2027 — creating two deposits in April, July and December and none in January, May and August. Full calendar: SSI payment schedule 2027.

Do SSI resource limits change in 2027?

No. The countable-resource limits remain $2,000 for an individual and $3,000 for a couple, unchanged since 1989. They are set in the statute and are not adjusted by the COLA.

Does my state supplement rise with the COLA?

Not automatically — the COLA applies to the federal payment. States decide separately what happens to their supplement, within federal pass-along rules. The 50-state breakdown is on the SSI state supplements page.

I get both Social Security and SSI. How does the COLA affect me?

Your Social Security rises by 3.6%, but because Social Security counts as income for SSI, your SSI payment typically falls by roughly the same amount after the two-month retrospective accounting lag — your combined total generally rises only slightly. This offset is the most common reason an SSI payment drops in the spring after a COLA.

Does the COLA affect my SNAP or Medicaid?

It can. The COLA raises your countable income for means-tested programs: SNAP counts the increased benefit, and SSI-linked Medicaid follows your SSI status. Many recipients see small adjustments rather than losses, but you must report income changes to the administering agency as your state requires.

Other programs & general

Do VA disability benefits get a 2027 COLA?

The VA COLA matches Social Security's percentage — 3.6% for 2027 — but it is not automatic: it requires the Veterans' Compensation COLA Act (S. 4487 this cycle), and the VA's official 2027 rate table had not been published at the time of writing. Treat any 2027 VA dollar rates you see before that table appears as projections. Full breakdown: VA disability COLA 2027 and VA DIC and survivor COLA.

What do federal retirees get — CSRS and FERS?

CSRS annuities rise by the full 3.6%. Under the FERS "diet COLA" formula, most FERS annuitants receive 2.6% (the CPI increase minus one percentage point when the COLA exceeds 3%). The first increased federal annuity payment is January 4, 2027. Full explainer and comparison table: federal retiree COLA 2027.

What about railroad retirement?

Railroad Tier I benefits rise 3.6%, the same as Social Security. Tier II benefits rise by 32.5% of the CPI increase, which works out to 1.2% for 2027. Averages and the dual-benefit rules: railroad retirement COLA 2027.

Does military retired pay get the same COLA?

Yes — military retired pay uses the same CPI-based adjustment, 3.6% for 2027, with the first increased payment on December 31, 2026 (for the January entitlement). Details: military retiree COLA 2027.

Does the COLA increase my spouse's or survivor benefit too?

Yes. Spousal, divorced-spouse, child and survivors benefits all rise by the same 3.6%, and the family maximum amounts that cap combined payments on one record rise as well. Estimate yours on the survivors calculator.

Can the COLA ever be negative?

No. If prices fall over the measurement period, the COLA is 0.0% — benefits are never reduced by the formula. That is what happened in 2009, 2010 and 2015.

I was told the COLA is a scam or that I must sign up — is that true?

No. The COLA is a statutory, automatic adjustment announced by the SSA every October. It requires no sign-up, no fee and no action. Treat any call, text or ad asking you to pay or hand over personal data to get your COLA as a scam.

Is the COLA the same as the federal employee pay raise?

No — they are separate decisions. The beneficiary COLA is an automatic, CPI-based adjustment set by formula. Federal civilian and military pay raises are set separately by the President and Congress and have no effect on Social Security amounts (military retired pay, by contrast, does follow the COLA formula).

Where can I check my own amount officially?

In the Message Center of your my Social Security account at ssa.gov, where your exact 2027 amount is posted in late November 2026, or in the paper COLA notice mailed in December 2026. Those are the only official figures; every calculator, including this site's, is an estimate.

Where do these numbers come from?

The SSA's October 2026 COLA release and fact sheet, BLS CPI-W data, and CMS premium publications — with projections (the 2027 Part B premium, 2027 VA rates) always labeled as projections. Our methodology is described on the about page.
