How the birthday rule works

Since May 1997 the SSA has staggered Social Security payments across three Wednesdays of each month, keyed to the birth date of the worker whose record pays the benefit. The system spreads deposits, bank traffic and call-center volume across the month instead of landing every check on the 1st or 3rd. Everyone who was already on the rolls before the change kept the legacy 3rd-of-the-month schedule, as do beneficiaries who receive both Social Security and SSI (SSI itself is paid on the 1st, on its own schedule).

The complete month-by-month calendar for everyone is on the 2027 payment dates page, and next year's calendar is already published as the 2028 payment schedule.

Frequently asked questions

Which Wednesday do I get paid on?

It depends on the day of the month you were born: the 1st–10th are paid on the second Wednesday, the 11th–20th on the third Wednesday, and the 21st–31st on the fourth Wednesday. People who claimed before May 1997 — and people who receive both Social Security and SSI — are instead paid on the 3rd of the month.

Whose birthday sets the date for spousal or survivors benefits?

The worker's. Benefits paid on someone else's record follow the birth date of the person whose earnings the benefit is based on — your deceased spouse's birthday for survivors benefits, your spouse's for spousal benefits.

Why does my January 2027 date fall in December 2026?

That happens on the 3rd-of-the-month schedule: January 3, 2027 is a Sunday and January 1 is a federal holiday, so the payment moves back to Thursday, December 31, 2026. The same previous-business-day rule applies whenever a payday lands on a weekend or holiday.

Do these dates include the 2027 COLA?

Yes — every 2027 date listed by the tool is a payment that includes the 3.6% increase, starting with the January cycle.
