Why SSI is paid in December
SSI is normally paid on the 1st of the month, but January 1, 2027 is a federal holiday, so the January payment moves to the previous business day: December 31, 2026. Which January Wednesday is yours?
Social Security pays on the second, third or fourth Wednesday, set by the birth date of the person whose work record the benefit is based on. For retirement and SSDI that is your own birth date; for spousal and survivors benefits it is the worker's birth date, which may not be your own. Beneficiaries who started receiving benefits before May 1997 — including many who receive both Social Security and SSI — are paid on the 3rd instead of a Wednesday. January 3, 2027 is a Sunday and January 1 is a holiday, so this group's first increased payment is likewise expected on December 31, 2026.
