Why the raise in your bank account may look smaller
Two things shrink the visible increase. First, if Medicare Part B is deducted from your check, the 2027 premium (not yet announced; projected about $209.50 vs $202.90 in 2026) takes back roughly $6–7 of the raise — the average retiree's take-home still rises by about $68. Second, the SSA rounds payable benefits down to the nearest dollar, so your official amount can be a dollar less than a straight multiplication suggests. Your exact figure arrives in the SSA's December 2026 COLA notice.

Frequently asked questions
What is the Social Security COLA for 2027?
The Social Security Administration announced on October 14, 2026 that the cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for 2027 is 3.6%. It applies to Social Security retirement, disability, survivors and spouse benefits, and to Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
How do I calculate my 2027 benefit?
Multiply your current monthly benefit by 1.036. For example, $1,500 becomes $1,554, and $2,000 becomes $2,072. The calculator on this page does the math for you, including an estimated take-home amount after Medicare Part B.
How much is the average increase?
The SSA estimates the average retired worker's benefit rises by about $75 a month, from $2,095 to $2,170. The average disabled worker's benefit rises from $1,642 to $1,701, and an aged widow or widower's from $1,936 to $2,005.
When will the SSA tell me my exact new amount?
The SSA posts your exact 2027 amount in your my Social Security account in late November 2026 and mails the official COLA notice during December 2026.
